Enhancing Safety at Golf Events

On a seemingly typical summer day at the Travelers Championship in Cromwell, Connecticut, a dangerous lightning strike occurred, sending two people to the hospital and could quite honestly have been worse. The incident happened near the fifth green of the TPC River Highlands course, where the $20 million PGA Tour signature event was being played.

The PGA Tour and on-site meteorologists did a phenomenal job in alerting players, personnel, volunteers and patrons of the lightning threat well ahead of time. In this case, there were storms ahead of the main line of activity, which made this an especially tough forecast.

At approximately 4:26 p.m. ET, the Cromwell Police Department received multiple 911 calls reporting a lightning strike in the area of 6 Pierson Green.

First responders quickly arrived at the scene and found a tree struck by lightning and three people affected by the strike. Two of the individuals were transported to area hospitals for further evaluation, while the third refused treatment.
