On a seemingly typical summer day at the Travelers Championship in Cromwell, Connecticut, a dangerous lightning strike occurred, sending two people to the hospital and could quite honestly have been worse. The incident happened near the fifth green of the TPC River Highlands course, where the $20 million PGA Tour signature event was being played.
The PGA Tour and on-site meteorologists did a phenomenal job in alerting players, personnel, volunteers and patrons of the lightning threat well ahead of time. In this case, there were storms ahead of the main line of activity, which made this an especially tough forecast.

Such incidents are not new to the PGA Tour. In 2019, a significant lightning strike during the Tour Championship in Atlanta injured six people. It was only the early warnings of onsite meteorologists that prevented further injuries.
